Introduction
Every year, Odoo releases a new version of its platform. And every year, the improvements get more meaningful.
Odoo's product team recently shared an early preview of what is coming in Odoo 20. These are not final features. Things may still change before the official release. But the direction is very clear.
We have been working with Odoo for years, and what was shown at this event is genuinely exciting. From AI agents that take action inside your system, to a redesigned Sign app, to long-overdue accounting improvements, Odoo 20 is shaping up to be a big update.
Here is breakdown will help you plan ahead.
Accounting and Finance Updates
Accounting gets meaningful improvements in almost every Odoo release. Odoo 20 is no different.
Direct Vendor Payments Inside Odoo
This one has been requested for years. You will soon be able to pay vendors directly from inside Odoo, without exporting files or switching to another platform.
Your accounts payable team will save time and reduce the risk of manual errors. Everything stays inside one workflow.
AI-Powered Accounting Audit Tool
Odoo 20 will include an AI-assisted audit feature. It generates an audit report and highlights issues like missing transactions, unreconciled entries, and posting anomalies.
This is especially useful for businesses that do not have a full-time CFO. It acts like an onboarding helper that keeps your books clean and flags problems early.
Parent-Child Hierarchy for Chart of Accounts
This is a long-requested change. Previously, Odoo used account groups for chart of account structure. Now it is switching to a parent-child hierarchy, which is the standard approach in North America.
Each account will have a parent account you can specify directly. Simple, familiar, and much easier to work with.
Dollar Amount in Period Comparisons
When running reports like profit and loss, you can now see both the percentage change and the actual dollar amount change side by side. Small feature, but accountants will appreciate it.
Sales, eCommerce and Sign
Section Templates in Sales Quotes
If you use the same product groups or service bundles across multiple quotes, this will save you real time. You can now save a quote section as a template and reuse it in future quotes with one click. All items, descriptions, and prices come along with it.
Smart Cross-Sell Suggestions for eCommerce
When you create a product in Odoo's eCommerce module, the system will now automatically suggest relevant cross-sell and upsell options. It reads context clues from the product name and category to make smart recommendations. You can always override them, but the default suggestions will be a good starting point.
Customer-Facing Return Management
This is one of the most exciting eCommerce updates. Customers will be able to initiate and track returns directly through the customer portal.
Returns have never been a strong point in Odoo's eCommerce workflow. This changes that. The return connects to the backend, creates the receipt, and keeps everything in one place.
Sign App Redesign
The Sign app is getting a major overhaul in Odoo 20. The interface is being rebuilt, and it is now connected to activities across every app in Odoo.
This means any activity in any module can automatically trigger a signature request. A common use case is sending NDAs to customers before a project begins.
If you are still using a separate tool for electronic signatures, this update is worth paying attention to.
Inventory and Manufacturing
Faster Quantity Updates in Inventory
You can now update on-hand quantities directly on the inventory screen by typing the number in. No extra screens, no extra clicks.
For businesses tracking by lots or serial numbers, a popup will still appear for those specific cases. But for simple quantity tracking, this is much faster.
Point of Sale Stock Without the Inventory App
Point of sale now has its own ability to track stock independently. It no longer needs to rely on the full inventory app. This makes the setup lighter and easier to manage for businesses that only need basic stock tracking at the point of sale.
Manufacturing Kanban Improvements
The manufacturing kanban view has been significantly improved based on direct user feedback.
You can now see component availability right inside the kanban card. There is also a new work order kanban with planning controls so you can manage production on a weekly basis from one clean view.
This is something manufacturing teams have been asking for. Managing orders and checking material availability from one screen is a big productivity gain.
Mass Updates for Bill of Materials
If a component appears across many bill of materials records, you can now update or replace it in bulk. This saves a lot of manual work, especially when a supplier changes a part or you switch to a new material.
PLM Change Order Cost Report
A new report in the product lifecycle management module shows all engineering changes over a period of time, along with the costs associated with each change. Useful for manufacturers tracking the financial impact of design decisions.
Field Service, Projects and Timesheets
Field Service Moves Into the Planning App
This is a significant structural change. Field service is no longer a standalone app on the dashboard. It is now part of the Planning app.
The workflow is the same. You can still sell a service that generates a field service job. But you will find and manage everything inside Planning.
The reason for this change is better resource allocation. When all your field workers, their schedules, and their jobs are in one planning view, managing a large team becomes much easier.
If you use field service regularly, give yourself time to get familiar with the new layout before Odoo 20 goes live.
Live Map for Field Workers
Field managers can now see a live map showing where all field workers are in real time. Workers need to be logged into Odoo on their phone for this to work.
There is also a new route optimization feature that calculates the best order for visiting multiple job sites. Less driving, better scheduling.
New Project Margin Reports
The old project overview report is being replaced with a new set of reports focused on margins. If you run a services business and bill time to projects, this gives you a clearer picture of profitability per project.
Universal Timesheet Timer
A small but useful addition. A timer icon will appear at the top of every screen in Odoo. Click it, log your time, and assign it to a task and project, all without leaving whatever you were doing.
AI-Suggested Timesheet Entries
Odoo 20 will suggest timesheet entries based on detected activity. If your team logs a lot of billable hours across many projects, this will help keep entries organized and accurate.
Mobile, Offline Mode and AI Agents
Full Mobile Redesign
The entire mobile layout is being rebuilt. The new design is more touch-friendly, better organized, and easier to navigate on a phone screen.
If your team uses Odoo on mobile regularly, this will feel like a different experience in a good way.
Offline Mode
One of the most requested features is finally arriving. Odoo will support offline use, meaning you can create records, edit data, and make changes even without an internet connection.
When your connection comes back, everything syncs automatically. This helps workers who had a connection and then lose it mid-session.
Note: You will likely need to have records loaded before losing connection. New records from scratch may have some limitations. But this is a strong first step.
AI Agents That Take Action
This is the most forward-looking feature in Odoo 20. AI agents can now receive natural language instructions and execute actions inside your Odoo system.
For example, you can type something like "find all leads assigned to this person where the status is not qualified and reassign them." The agent reads the instruction, does the work, and tells you what it did.
You can also hand it a document and ask it to create tasks, assign them to the right people, or update a project based on the content.
Voice input is also supported. You can speak your instructions to the AI agent, which is useful when you are on the go.
This is still early, but the direction is clear. Odoo is building toward a system where routine tasks can be handled by AI, freeing up your team for more important work.
Other Notable Updates
Marketing Automation Redesign
Marketing automation is getting a full visual overhaul. The layout and the process for adding steps are both changing. More details will come closer to the Odoo 20 release.
Help Desk AI
The help desk module can now search through all past tickets automatically and suggest resolutions for new incoming issues. For high-volume support teams, this speeds up response times significantly.
AI Website Assistant
You can now edit your Odoo website by typing instructions in plain English. Tell it to change the layout, adjust the title, or add a design element, and it executes the changes. Think of it as having a web designer respond to plain text instructions in real time.
New Industry Modules
Odoo continues to expand its industry-specific modules. New additions include construction, custom industrial equipment, and auto repair shops. These out-of-the-box configurations reduce setup time for businesses in these sectors.
Conclusion
Odoo 20 is bringing meaningful improvements across every part of the platform. The standout updates are the AI agents that can take real action inside your system, the long-overdue eCommerce return management, the direct vendor payment capability, and the much-improved mobile experience with offline support.
